Writing For the Web - What Can YOU Write?

By Angela Booth

Want to write for the Web? You can, because unlike writing for print publications, you don't need any qualifications - you can be a completely new writer.

So let's look at how to get started.

The Article and Blog Gold Mine for Novice Writers - Start Digging

Although writing articles and blog posts won't make you rich, these simple Web writing jobs do have big benefits.

Here are some of them:

1. You Become Comfortable Looking at Web Pages As Writing

There are many different kinds of Web sites, and Web pages. As a newcomer, it's difficult to judge who buys Web writing, and what kind of writing they buy. A shopping site needs different content from an educational site, for example.

2. You Get Familiar With Basic Web Technology

If you can use a word processor and an email program, you can write for the Web. Many people who buy your articles and blog posts buy them as plain text files. Others require you to log in to a site, and post your material online, because it saves them time.

Enter "HTML tutorial" into Google, and practice linking, adding header codes and bolding text.

3. You Get Known to People Who Hire Writers

This is a biggie. When you start out, your only aim should be to collect testimonials. Don't worry about the money for now. Just get a testimonial (glowing, we hope) from every person who hires you. Every testimonial is money in the bank. People will pay you for your experience; so expect to put some effort into getting that experience.

4. You Build a Bank of Writing Credits

The more you've written, the more you're worth. In everything online, experience and results count.

For example, if you can say "My article [enter the article title] is ranked #1 on Google for this high-value keyword [enter the keyword here]", EVERYONE will want you to write for them.

Or if you can say: "I wrote for the top-100 blog on Technorati [blog name]" other bloggers will want to hire you.

How to Get Hired to Write for the Web

Want to get hired? Start writing.

Write some articles, and start your own blog. For people to hire you, they must see what you can do. There is no substitute for producing writing which you can show people.

I teach writers, and occasionally I'll bump into a writer who says: "I've been hunting for writing jobs for a month, no one is interested."

My response: "Send me the Web address where you've posted your writing samples."

Invariably, the "writer" hasn't written a single word.

Please - just write. People must be able to see something (preferably many things) you've written, before they'll stuff your PayPal account with cash.

Once you've created some sample articles, and have created your own blog with at least ten posts, visit the outsourcing sites - you'll get jobs.

So there you have it: get started writing for the Web by writing simple articles and blog posts. Before you know it, your career will take off. If you can write, there's big money to be made, so get started.
